Who Has Infertility?
Infertility is very common, affecting approximately 1 in 6 couples of reproductive age. It is recommended to see a fertility specialist if you:
- Are under the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive for 12 months
- Are over the age of 35 and have been trying to conceive for 6 months
- Are a woman 40 years or older and trying to achieve a pregnancy
Certain circumstances are more likely to affect fertility. If you are planning on starting a family, you may want to speak with a fertility specialsit sooner if any of the following apply:
- Known reproductive disorder such as endometriosis or PCOS
- Irregular or absent menstrual cycles
- Two or more pregnancy losses
- Unable to ejaculate
- Genetic condition that is known to affect fertility
- Known structural abnormalities of reproductive organs
- Endocrine (hormonal) disorders such as thyroid disease
- Pituitary tumors or hyperprolactinemia
- Prior surgery or medical conditions that may complicate conception or pregnancy, including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or other sexually transmitted infections
- Single individuals
- LGBTQIA+ couples
- Transgender individuals
