We recognize the emotional toll that results from each pregnancy loss. To give those who are faced with the anguish of recurrent pregnancy loss the hope, compassionate care, and extensive expertise required to help them realize their dream of becoming parents, we have created the Center for Recurrent Pregnancy Loss led by Dr. John Rapisarda.

What is Recurrent Pregnancy Loss?

Recurrent pregnancy loss is defined by two or more consecutive lost pregnancies without a history of live birth. Recurrent pregnancy loss may be distinct from infertility, which is identified by the inability to achieve a successful pregnancy after a year of attempting to conceive.

Although approximately 25 percent of all recognized pregnancies result in pregnancy loss, less than 5 percent of women will experience two consecutive pregnancy losses, and only 1 percent experience three or more. Women who experience two or more pregnancy losses may benefit from a thorough medical evaluation and psychological support.

Categories and Causes

Pregnancy loss can occur spontaneously or can recur. Both cases can have a variety of different causes.

Spontaneous Pregnancy Loss
A pregnancy loss in a fertile woman is most often due to an abnormal number of chromosomes in the developing fetus as a result of random errors that occur as the egg or sperm matures in the body prior to fertilization. This type of loss can happen at any age, and incidences occur more commonly as women get older.

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss
When a woman experiences two or more consecutive pregnancy losses with or without a history of a live birth, it can be due to a variety of identifiable factors. Abnormalities of the uterus, genetic factors, and disturbances of the immune system can all cause recurrent pregnancy loss. Up to 50 percent of patients will not have an identifiable cause.
