We are excited to announce that Dr. Juan Alvarez has joined the Fertility Centers of Illinois physician team at the River North and Tinley Park offices.

Dr. Alvarez rotated through the FCI clinic as a medical student, and the experience proved to be career-altering – from that point forward, he was determined to become a reproductive endocrinologist.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, he completed an internship and residency at the Emory University School of Medicine in the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He then went on to the west coast and completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility through a University of California, Los Angeles and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center combined program. He is excited for his medical career to come full circle by coming back to Chicago and treating patients where his medical education began.

To introduce you to Dr. Alvarez, we asked him a few questions about his interest in reproductive medicine, medical inspiration, and personal interests:

What do you like most about what you do?

I love seeing all the success stories of my patients and knowing that I have impacted their lives in such a positive way.

In practice, what are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of being able to connect to my patients on a deeper level to understand the challenges, struggles and emotions that it takes to go through fertility treatment.

Why did you choose to work in the field of reproductive medicine?

My career path to becoming an REI started at Fertility Centers of Illinois as a medical student. I was fortunate enough to rotate through the FCI clinic and witness firsthand the remarkable impact that REI doctors have on patient’s lives as well as the outstanding medical advances that are made everyday in our field. I knew from this experience I wanted to be part of that.

What do you consider your special areas of interest in reproductive medicine and why?

There are reproductive medicine topics that I am passionate about. As a member of the LGBTQ community, I want to help, treat, and advocate for the reproductive health of the LGBTQ with a specific interest in egg donation, sperm donation and surrogacy. Also, as a minority, I take joy in taking care of Latino/Hispanic patients. As a native of Colombia, I am fluent in Spanish and I can relate to Latino patients on a personal level. Lastly, as a continuation of my research, I am also interested in the impact of obesity on fertility.

What is your approach to medicine?

I always strive to provide evidence-based medicine to all my patients, but also understand that there are subtle differences between patients and not everyone falls into a statistic. I use this individual approach to help me mold, guide, and construct treatment options for each one of my patients.

Share something unique people don’t know about you.

My grandfather was a very famous baseball commentator and news radio personality in Colombia.

What do you do for fun in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

Biking, crossfit, binge watching a good series on TV, and trying new restaurants.
