In honor of National Infertility Awareness Month this October, we want to do our part in building awareness of the growing issue that now affects 7.3 million men and women in the United States. This number represents 15% of couples in their prime reproductive years and impacts both men and women equally. That’s right, contrary to popular belief - infertility is not just a female issue!

We know that in this economic climate, many couples may not be in a position to afford treatment or consultations with fertility experts, so we wanted to provide six quick tips on how couples can actively boost their fertility.

  1. Diet: Concentrate on eating fresh, organic, nutrient-filled whole foods such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains as much as possible. Be sure to drink plenty of water every day and avoid the bad toxins which include smoking, caffeine, alcohol, fried foods and saturated fats.

  2. Exercise: Regular exercise is a must, but stick with low impact options such as walking, swimming and yoga to name a few. What many do not know is that high intensity activities can place excessive metabolic stress on the body, which can negatively impact your ability to get pregnant.

  3. Healthy BMI: We all know that your weight can affect your fertility, but not just being overweight! In fact, being too much above AND below your Body Mass Index (BMI) can be harmful and even a 5% weight gain or loss can be beneficial. Experts consider a BMI between 18 and 29 to be ideal.

  4. Manage Stress: Infertility and treatment often creates stress which may impact your chances of conception. Try to consciously reduce stress by allowing yourself time to relax and even consider relaxation techniques such as meditation and breathing exercises to help calm your mind and body. In fact, more and more clinical studies support the benefits of holistic techniques such as acupuncture, massage and yoga in helping boosti fertility. For more information on our holistic programs and free seminars, visit the Mind/Body Treatments tab on the home page.

  5. Age: It’s crucial that women be aware that fertility declines with increasing age and problems accelerate for those past the age of 35. Women should consider trying to start their families at an earlier age and if necessary, seek infertility help sooner so causes can be evaluated and treated properly.

  6. Explore All Options: Since infertility has multiple causes, treatment options also vary. It’s important to fully understand the cause of your fertility troubles, in order to effectively identify the best option for you and your partner.
