Complimentary and Alternative Medicines (CAM) are being offered in more and more academic hospitals across the US, quickly becoming the fastest growing sector of American health-care. Fertility Centers of Illinois pioneered this trend several years ago, becoming one of the first medical and fertility clinics to offer integrated mind/body therapies to support patient’s medical treatments.

While other medical institutions have since followed suit, FCI remains the only medical facility to offer fully integrated, “in-house” treatments, through an alliance with Pulling Down the Moon (PDtM). PDtM is a fertility specific, holistic treatment center that works in partnership with our medical doctors to provide therapeutic and ailment specific mind/body treatments. These include yoga, meditation, acupuncture, massage and more, specifically designed to boost fertility and enhance medical treatment.

The most common question – do they work? There are an increasing number of academic studies that now support these methods. For example, a 2000 study published in the Journal of Fertility and Sterility showed that cognitive and mind/body support groups significantly increased pregnancy rates in Infertility patients. A recent study in the British Journal of Medicine also showed that pairing acupuncture with IVF can raise a couple’s odds of getting pregnant by 65%. However, not all studies have shown a benefit, but the lack of adverse effects and acceptability by so many patients make these treatments widely popular.

At FCI, we have seen firsthand, how holistic techniques can aid in coping with stress and achieving a calmer level of existence - both to enhance medical treatment, improve reproductive function and for an overall better state of mind and health. In fact, 75% of patients that responded to an in house survey conducted by Pulling Down The Moon said they were pregnant within six months of completing holistic services.
